Stormproof your HVAC System

It’s storm season and here’s all you need to know on how to avoid spending money fixing your HVAC system due to storm damage with simple things to stormproof your equipment. Storms can be very destructive. You're undoubtedly already aware of the importance of stocking up on water, nonperishable foods, flashlights, and batteries, as well as storm-proofing your home. But most individuals overlook their HVAC system, so we’re here to help you protect your home and HVAC system during storm season.

Regular Maintenance: You shouldn't be surprised if your automobile breaks down if you neglect oil changes and maintenance. The same principle applies to your heating and cooling systems. If you neglect preventative maintenance, it'll only be a matter of time before you have to pay for a costly repair.

Clean up: To avoid impact damage, remove any loose debris and things from around the unit, as well as cut any trees that may break free during the storm.

Preventive gear: Use hurricane straps or a protective cage to secure your air conditioner or any other HVAC components to the base. Cover your outside HVAC equipment with a weatherproof tarp to protect the system from rain and other debris. Keep in mind, however, that you should remove the tarp as soon as the storm has passed, as it can cause mold and rust in high humidity. (SMO, 2019)

Install a Surge Protector: A whole-house surge protector is a lot less expensive than replacing your electric-powered equipment. You can purchase one from a home improvement or hardware store, or you can contact your electric company since many of them offer surge protection and guarantees.

Inspect: After the storm is over, visually inspect the air conditioning unit for any evidence of visible damage, remove any obvious debris, and inspect any exterior electrical components. Return power to your system you disconnected it before the storm and it is clear and safe to do so.

Insurance: Review your homeowner’s insurance policy. Repairs or replacement of parts or replacement of the unit itself due to a storm may be all or partially covered.

It's always a good idea to make a future plan or checklist to assist you to remember miscellaneous things before, during, and after a storm. While you may absolutely storm-proof your system on your own, an annual check-up before winter storms is always a good idea.
